Después de los calores veraniegos va siendo hora de ponernos a trabajar un poco. No se me ocurre mejor forma de empezar el nuevo curso que hablando de Spanky, o Kevin Long, a raíz del nuevo vídeo que ha sacado para la marca de ejes ACE y que no deja de ser un nuevo capítulo de una buena serie de entregas protagonizadas por este patinador que se han sucedido de forma bastante continuada en los últimos años, consiguiendo siempre estar en boca de ciertos reductos también gracias a sus prolijas publicaciones en una cuenta de Instagram más que productiva y, probablemente, de las más valiosas incluso dentro de esa, a veces, desafortunada fuente de información social y audiovisual.

Empecemos con unos pequeños flashes biográficos para ponernos un poco en la piel de este patinador, ya entrado en años, pero a la vez ejemplar por mantener una buena forma que ha sabido emplear en el refinamiento de su gusto a la hora de seleccionar maniobras e ir metiéndolas en la bolsa de trucos.

Spanky es hijo de un viejo surfista y creció al norte del famoso valle de Los Ángeles. No fue a la escuela, fue sumergido en el contradictorio mundo del homeschooling, lo cual básicamente consiste en ser educado en casa y no asistir a las clases siguiendo los dictámenes del sistema. El concepto en sí suena maravilloso, pero a la práctica parece no serlo tanto e inclusivo el propio Spanky, entrevistado en 2003, se mostró bastante contrario a este modelo educativo, pues a su entender ya te sitúa demasiado cerca de dejar la escuela y carga demasiada responsabilidad en el propio estudiante. Sea como sea, esto es una opinión personal, todos los skaters tenemos mucho de autodidactas, ya sea dentro o fuera de un sistema y, al final, las fórmulas perfectas no existen, solamente es tener suerte y vivir una vida que encaje con tu perfil o tener mala suerte y joderte, jajajaja... así son las cosas.

Entre una cosa y la otra, Kevin Long, apodado "Spanky" por su hermano mayor, acumula una larga lista de sponsors desde una edad muy temprana: City Stars, Toy Machine... hasta acabar en Baker, donde lleva un buen puñado de años, creciendo dentro de este gigante, pasando de ser el típico niño prodigio que hay en todos los equipos hasta formar parte de las decisiones de la marca y acabar siendo el jefe absoluto del departamento creativo. En dicho departamento, colabora con grandes nombres de la ilustración sobre tablas de skate y además parece que se trata de algunos de sus más allegadas amistades: Neckface, Mike Gigliotti, ... a su vez, mantiene un fuerte vínculo de amistad con Ed Templeton, dueño de Toy Machine y uno de pros los pioneros en querer ser el autor de los gráficos de sus propias tablas, definiendo un estilo ya icónico en el skateboarding y sin duda una influencia innegable para Spanky.

De su skateboarding actual diremos que ha sabido madurar hacia una visión repleta de aprovechamiento de los elementos callejeros más comunes en su territorio, pero llevados a una interpretación llena de buen gusto que a muy pocos defrauda y que puede encandilar a puristas añejos, jóvenes y hasta a personas que ni siquiera entienden de patín, sin dejar de ser fiel a aquellas cosas que el skater más roído y avinagrado adora. Todo ello se combina con selecciones musicales divinamente pristinas, a juego con la propia elegancia de este patinador. Mención especial merece un videoclip del afamado cantante de country alternativo Bonnie "Prince" Billy, en el que Spanky sale patinando y se encarga de la dirección de arte y la edición; todo ello muestra clarísima de su estilo. After the summer heat, it's time to get back to work. I can't think of a better way to start the new season than by talking about Spanky, or Kevin Long, in light of the new video he’s released for ACE trucks. This video is yet another chapter in a solid series of releases starring this skater, which have come out quite regularly in recent years. Spanky has managed to stay in the spotlight among certain groups, thanks in part to his prolific posts on an Instagram account that’s more than productive and probably one of the most valuable, even within that sometimes unfortunate source of social and audiovisual information.

Let’s start with a few biographical flashes to get into the shoes of this skater, now getting on in years, but still an example of maintaining good shape. He’s used this to refine his taste when selecting tricks and adding them to his bag of moves.

Spanky is the son of an old surfer and grew up north of the famous Los Angeles valley. He didn’t go to school; instead, he was immersed in the contradictory world of homeschooling, which basically means being educated at home without attending classes under the traditional school system. The concept itself sounds great, but in practice, it doesn’t seem to be that way. Even Spanky himself, when interviewed in 2003, expressed his opposition to this educational model, as in his view, it puts you too close to dropping out of school and places too much responsibility on the student. However, this is just a personal opinion. All skaters are quite self-taught in one way or another, whether within or outside of a system, and in the end, there are no perfect formulas. It’s all about luck—living a life that suits your profile or being unlucky and having to deal with it. Haha... that’s just how it goes.

One way or another, Kevin Long, nicknamed "Spanky" by his older brother, has had a long list of sponsors since a very young age: City Stars, Toy Machine... until landing at Baker, where he’s spent many years growing within this giant. He transitioned from being the typical child prodigy that every team has, to being involved in brand decisions and eventually becoming the absolute head of the creative department. In this department, he collaborates with big names in skateboarding artwork, who also seem to be some of his closest friends: Neckface, Mike Gigliotti, ... he also maintains a strong friendship with Ed Templeton, owner of Toy Machine and one of the pioneers who wanted to be the creator of his own deck graphics, defining an iconic style in skateboarding and undoubtedly an undeniable influence on Spanky.

As for his current skateboarding, we could say that he has matured toward a vision that makes the most of the most common street elements in his territory, but interprets them with a refined sense of style that hardly disappoints anyone. His approach can captivate old-school purists, young people, and even those who don’t understand skateboarding at all, while still staying true to what the most hard-core, gritty skater loves. All of this is combined with divinely pristine musical selections, perfectly matching the elegance of this skater. A special mention goes to a music video by the renowned alternative country singer Bonnie "Prince" Billy, in which Spanky is seen skating and is responsible for the art direction and editing—clear proof of his style.
